A young man is dead and a Land Army girl injured in a shooting incident near Inchture. The man, William James Neilson (25) lorry driver, The Bield , Abernyte was found yesterday morning, lying dead, with a shot gun by his side.
On the previous night Neilson had called at a cottage to take his fiance, Miss Mary Robertson, for a walk. They stood outside talking for 10 minutes, when Miss Robertson went in to change.
She was about to leave when three shots rang out in quick succession from a shotgun only a few yards away. The darkness and the fact that the gun was so near probably saved Miss Robertson's life, for the shot had not spread very much when it hit the wall at her head without doing her any injury.
As she turned into the house another shot rang out and she was struck by several pellets, but not badly hurt,
The head gardener at Millhill, Inchture, Mr Douglas, yesterday morning found the body of Neilson lying only a few yards from the cottage. A shotgun was lying near and he had severe head injuries.
Miss Robertson was employed at Millhill Farm.
